USING DATA & AI FOR SOCIAL GOOD

Mission-driven artificial intelligence or the responsible application of artificial intelligence (AI) to solve societal and ecological challenges, sometimes also dubbed “AI for good,” is the use of machine-learning techniques to streamline operations and enhance programs at nonprofits, nongovernmental organizations (NGOs), and social enterprises. Artificial intelligence has been disrupting the world with its possibilities, and the development sector is not far behind. A Mckinsey study stated that current AI capabilities could contribute to tackling cases across all 17 of the UN’s sustainable development goals, potentially helping hundreds of millions of people in both advanced and emerging countries. It could increase the capabilities of the social sector manifold, lower costs, and improve efficiencies.

 WHY WE ARE DOING THIS

Although there is tremendous potential for the application of AI in the development sector, it should be noted that most organizations across the globe don’t have a trained workforce, funding, programmatic insights to utilise AI. Even more so, widespread adoption of artificial intelligence has its own obstacles - from funding to solving complex problems such as developing machine learning systems, obtaining large-scale, high-quality structured datasets and creating affordable, accessible computing infrastructure.

The forum aims to bring together leading experts, thinkers and practitioners to explore how AI can transform the social sector for the better and discuss questions around the future of AI and the opportunities, impact and challenges that mission-driven artificial intelligence presents us with as well as how non-profits can take advantage of the technology and AI to achieve greater impact and efficiency.
