EDUCATION

Even before the Covid-19, there have been numerous conversations about the challenges in India's education system. Lack of access to quality education for all, lack of inclusive education, scarcity of qualified teachers and low focus on life skills -have all contributed to low educational outcomes and lack of holistic development amongst students. The current crisis has further thrown into the spotlight these inherent flaws that have existed over decades, and has further exacerbated these challenges potentially wiping out years of progress.

Furthermore, there is clear indication of shrinkage in funding available to the social sector in the post-Covid world. A study by FSG revealed that funding for traditional CSR activities – not linked with COVID-19 – will reduce by 30 % to 60%. And even the funding that is available for the NGOs is being prioritized towards activities related to COVID-19. Many organisations working in the education space are potentially facing large funding cuts and even a threat to their survival.

WHY WE ARE DOING THIS

The education sector is a predominant part of the social impact sector in India. According to the Ministry of Statistics and Program Implementation, 24% of the total registered non-profits fall under education. In a country like our these organisations have been crucial in supporting the government education programs, plugging the gaps. The current crisis and disruption also provides a tremendous opportunity to re-look, re-imagine and reinvent the education in the country. It is critical that as we move past the lockdown, we take into account our learnings and experiences and work together to strengthen the education sector in the long term, and ensure the millions of children receive the best possible education. Through this track we create a convening of organisations, experts, funders and practitioners in the education space to come together and build dialogue linked to specific outcomes and create a space for actionable steps, leading to strengthening of organisations and the sector as a whole.
